A low-cost TMD was recently designed, fabricated, installed, and tested by CSA at a copper ore processing facility
in Utah. The device was so successful that the customer immediately ordered a quantity of 53 TMDs, and is likely to require up to
1000 more. The dampers are installed on a large impeller that circulates a mixture of crushed rock and water in a 25-foot high tank.
Prior to the use of the TMDs, the 3-ton impeller would rock violently while rotating. The TMDs, shown in the figure below are
24 inches tall are fabricated from carbon steel, utilize oil for the dashpot and fit on the underside of the impeller. The TMDs are
manually tunable between 5.0 and 5.6 Hz and damping was measured near 15% critical.
