Whole-Spacecraft Vibration Isolation for the MTI Launch on Taurus(Minotaur)
The MTI spacecraft is project of a major DOE Office of Nonproliferation and National Security
(DOE/NN) R&D program aimed at developing a broad range of new technologies for detecting facilities that could
be manufacturing weapons of mass destruction. This spacecraft will be launched on a Taurus launch vehicle in
February 2000. Coupled loads predictions show that during launch on the Taurus launch vehicle, dynamic loads
imparted to the MTI spacecraft will cause unacceptably low force/stress margins, if the spacecraft is
hard-mounted to the Taurus. A SoftRide vibration isolation system was designed to reduce the dynamic loads on the
MTI spacecraft. The SoftRide system was designed by CSA Engineering Inc., under an SBIR Phase II contract with the Air
Force Research Lab.
