Professional Engineering Services
Special Item Numbers (SIN):

SIN 871-2 Concept Development & Requirements Analysis
SIN 871-3 System Design Engineering and Integration
SIN 871-4 Test and Evaluation

We provide a variety of engineering services: mechanical is our main discipline, and we provide electrical, especially electromechanical, engineering as well.

Concept Development and Requirements Analysis - Services required under SIN 871-2 involve abstract or concept studies and analysis, requirements definition, preliminary planning, the evaluation of alternative technical approaches and associated costs for the development or enhancement of high level general performance specifications of a system, project, mission or activity. Typical associated tasks include, but are not limited to requirements analysis, cost/cost-performance trade-off analysis, feasibility analysis, regulatory compliance support, technology conceptual designs, training, privatization and outsourcing.

System Design, Engineering and Integration - Services required under SIN 871-3 involve the translation of a system (or subsystem, program, project, activity) concept into a preliminary and detailed design (engineering plans and specifications), performing risk identification/analysis/mitigation, traceability, and then integrating the various components to produce a working prototype or model of the system. Typical associated tasks include, but are not limited to computer-aided design, design studies and analysis, high level detailed specification preparation, configuration management and document control, fabrication, assembly and simulation, modeling, training, privatization and outsourcing.

Test and Evaluation - Services required under SIN 871-4 involve the application of various techniques demonstrating that a prototype system (subsystem, program, project or activity) performs in accordance with the objectives outlined in the original design. Typical associated tasks include, but are not limited to testing of a prototype and first article(s) testing, environmental testing, independent verification and validation, reverse engineering, simulation and modeling (to test the feasibility of a concept), system safety, quality assurance, physical testing of the product or system, training, privatization and outsourcing.

Example of the type of services CSA can provide - One of CSA’s core capabilities is vibration isolation. A potential customer may consider putting a sensitive payload on a rocket, missile, airplane or other vehicle. Under SIN 871-2, our engineers could understand the vibration environment, help determine the overall requirements for possible vibration isolation systems, and determine what range of benefits might be expected from vibration isolation, as well as the approximate size, weight, and if appropriate, power consumption. Under SIN 871-3, the concepts for vibration isolation could be analyzed in greater detail. Mechanical and electromechanical design, finite element and control system simulation, and the design refinements to meet secondary requirements and constraints could be carried out. A prototype vibration isolation system and/or first article could be built. Under SIN 871-4, the assembled system could be tested, and its performance relative to specifications and model predictions could be verified. In some cases, this prototype system could then be provided to the customer for use in a larger system-level validation. It may be that a first article may be all that is required for the application. Following testing at CSA, and any necessary customer testing, a first article could be deployed directly in the final application.
